Tina Marie Fleury-Grey Owl unexpectedly made her journey to the Spirit World on September 18, 2020 at the age of 64. She was housed at Hughes County Jail in Pierre, South Dakota, at the time of her death.

Tina loved the closeness of her multi-generational family: throughout her life, she could rely on their support and encouragement, beginning with her grandparents and continuing through to her grandchildren. Tina’s loved ones remember her as someone who was always available to do what she could for them because she thoroughly enjoyed helping people.

Growing up on South Dakota’s Crow Creek Reservation, Tina channeled this quality into the many team sports she excelled in, such as cheerleading, basketball, softball, and bowling. Tina became an accomplished athlete even as she kept up with her schoolwork. As she grew older, she took on employment and volunteer positions that allowed her to continue helping others.

Tina had nine children: Heather, Mark, Maureen, Mitzi, Tawnee, Paige, Peyton, Rosilee, and  Patrick Jr. She was also raising Suzanna, Jarel, and Davina, three of her precious grandchildren, as her own. She loved looking after the children and deeply cherished the time she spent with them.

After so many years of taking care of others, she was beginning to get tired and “often spoke of the joys at meeting her Maker," according to her obituary. She looked forward to reuniting with her two daughters who had previously passed and other close relatives, “all whom she missed so much.”

Tina leaves behind her husband of 33 years, Patrick Grey Owl Sr., along with her children, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. While all are saddened by the loss of Tina, they celebrate her life and rejoice at her reunion with her mother, daughters, and other family members in the Spirit World. Rest in peace, Tina.

This memorial was written by MOL team member Shirley Anne McCulley with information from an article by Stephen Lee of Capital Journal and an obituary from Hickey Funeral Chapel.
