On June 28th, 2020, Ivan Gonzalez-Ramirez passed away at the age of 68. From Colombia, Ivan is survived by family members in his home country, including his son and his daughter Liliana. Liliana told the press outlet Semana that she was not able to often communicate with her father in the final weeks of his life. Concerned about her father, she inquired if he had COVID-19 during her last call with him on June 5th. He responded, “No, something worse. I have pneumonia and water in my lungs, but I’m already getting better. When I get out of quarantine, I’ll communicate again.”
Ivan was extradited from Colombia to the Federal Detention Center in Miami in early April, where he was waiting for trial. According to a relative, he traveled in good health, but began experiencing shortness of breath in Miami. Ivan was transferred to a local hospital on June 22nd, where he tested positive for COVID-19. He passed away shortly after on June 28th. Ivan’s attorney, Orlando do Campo, told the Miami Herald that “his passing was tragic and unnecessary.” His daughter noted that Ivan had an insulin dependency as well as symptoms of hypertension that made him susceptible to respiratory diseases such as COVID-19. Had the BOP taken more actions to protect those especially vulnerable to the disease, Ivan’s life may not have been cut short. Ivan was a kind, considerate member of his community and will be missed deeply.
